THE GAWAD KALINGA EXPERIENCE

The PSTD-GK Project was off to a good start last

7. Anna Dayola + Jojo Trinidad
The teams interviewed representatives of the different
target groups after the 30-minute briefing that was provided
by the Regional Coordinator, Mr. Raul Dizon, and the tours
conducted by some the members of the Caretaker Team.
It is heartwarming to see a beautiful community arising from
the ashes of the 2004 fire that gutted all the shanties in
the area. It is a message of hope for all of us that
societal change can be achieved if we work together,
approach the problem in a holistic way and have the courage
to see our goals through.
I admire the GK volunteers who continue to work with the
Baseco community for their passion and determination to
create permanent change. These volunteers not only focus on
shelter and environment but also on child and youth
development, health, productivity and values formation--a
holistic approach to human development. As Mr, Meloto, GK
Executive Director puts it, GK is not just a CSR (corporate
social responsibility) project, it is a movement!
I hope that those who missed this opportunity to join last
Saturday's activity will participate by way of contributing
their time and energy when we implement the training
programs lined up for the various groups.
Once again I am reminded of what I learned from Cecille
Batalla last January: According to Martin Seligman (2002)
"Happiness can be raised...by using personal strengths to
serve some larger end." And that we, in Social Involvement,
plan to do in the next few months.
Come and be part of it!
