Description of the Talk
The
concept of mentoring is as old as it can be as an idea of
guided learning and development. History tells us that
mentoring is an age-old practice that guides and teaches a
student or a newcomer to develop his self professionally or
personally. A mentor can be a training coach, a teacher or
just anybody who wants to nurture talents, share knowledge
and wisdom but more than anything else a mentor is one who
has the passion to touch lives and make a difference. A
contemporary approach to mentoring is using the internet to
help others. What makes it particularly attractive today
when busy people hardly have enough time to attend to more
meetings is that it eliminates the need for a face to face
interaction. Online mentoring is an individualized support,
assistance, guidance and challenge given to a particular
individual or groups of individual whether one is a student
or a professional, is done totally online. It develops
mentees in any organization through mentors willing to
listen and help colleagues or newcomers. It is also a tool
that HR practitioners can use to develop an interactive
mentoring relationship between a newcomer and someone with
more experience. With advance technologies available today,
mentors and mentees can simply send an email, chat online,
use the message board or uses web pages to share and
exchange communications. It is a convenient way of learning
and sharing since communication can be set up at any time
and at any location.
